Business cards are often the first impression of your brand — and the paper does more of the talking than most people expect. Here is how we walk customers through the choice at our Markham shop.
Standard vs. premium cardstock
Standard 14pt cardstock is the everyday workhorse: crisp, affordable and fine for most businesses. Premium 16pt–18pt stock is noticeably thicker and stiffer; people notice it the moment the card lands in their hand.
- Standard (14pt) — best value; great for large runs and cards you hand out often.
- Premium (16pt–18pt) — a more refined feel for consultants, agencies, real estate and anyone whose card is part of the pitch.
Matte or gloss?
Gloss makes colours pop and photos look vivid, but it shows fingerprints and is hard to write on. Matte is subtle and smooth, easier to read under light, and you can jot a note on the back. Most professional-services cards look best on matte; retail and food brands often lean gloss.
Should you print double-sided?
If you have more than a name, title and two contact lines, yes. Put the essentials on the front and use the back for a tagline, a QR code to your quote form, or your service list. It costs little more and stops the front from getting crowded.
